Mark Ryan
Mark Ryan is a distinguished senior barrister specialising in high profile serious criminal defence work, and complex employment litigation. With 25 years experience, and a reputation built on robust advocacy, he represents clients across high-stakes matters where exceptional legal counsel is paramount.
An experienced litigator, Mark is a commanding and effective advocate in the courtroom. He brings extensive experience across every level of the New Zealand judicial system, regularly appearing in the District, Employment, and High Courts, as well as the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court.
Mark has a particular interest and significant expertise in defending complex, organised criminal offending, frequently navigating multi-accused prosecutions involving large-scale drug syndicates. His extensive trial experience also encompasses the most serious violent offences, including murder, manslaughter, and serious sexual offending.
Mark’s practice encompasses two distinct specialties: criminal defence and employment law. While renowned for his criminal advocacy, he is equally sought after for his standalone employment practice, regularly advising on complex workplace disputes, professional disciplinary matters, and regulatory investigations.
Mark holds both a Bachelor of Laws and a Master of Laws from the University of Auckland. He accepts private instructions across all areas of his practice. In criminal matters, he also accepts legal aid assignments for charges carrying life imprisonment.
